South Korea's energy ministry announced on March 1 that it would shut down 28 coal-fired power plants in March to ease the country's air pollution, Reuters reported.

In March, South Korea will shut down four old coal-fired power plants and eight normal coal-fired power plants that have been operating for more than 30 years, according to a document released by the South Korean Ministry of energy. Meanwhile, South Korea will shut down 16 coal-fired power plants for maintenance. A total of 28 coal-fired power plants will be shut down in the near future.

South Korea's energy ministry also said it would keep the operating rate of other coal-fired power plants within 80% after shutting down some coal-fired power plants.

It is understood that South Korea currently has about 60 coal-fired power plants, accounting for about 40% of the power supply in South Korea. In recent years, the air pollution problem in South Korea has become increasingly serious. Since 2017, South Korea has temporarily shut down a number of coal-fired power plants that have been operating in the country for more than 30 years.
